Setting Up Meta Ads Correctly: Pixel, Conversions API & Catalogue for Shopify and Shopware
How to set up the Pixel, Conversions API and product catalogue for Meta Ads on Shopify and Shopware – the foundation of every profitable campaign.

Before you put a single euro into Meta Ads, your setup decides whether that budget can work profitably. The best algorithm in the world only optimises as well as the signals it receives. And a catalogue with missing data costs you reach in exactly the campaigns that scale most strongly in e-commerce.
This guide walks you through the three building blocks that have to be right – for Shopify and Shopware.
The three building blocks of a clean setup
- Meta Pixel – captures actions in the browser (page view, ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase).
- Conversions API (CAPI) – reports the same events server-side, independent of browser tracking. Indispensable now that browser signals are increasingly blocked.
- Product catalogue / feed – the data basis for Advantage+ Shopping, dynamic retargeting and catalogue ads.
Pixel and CAPI have to be cleanly deduplicated (same event_id), otherwise Meta counts purchases twice and optimises on the wrong numbers.
Setup with Shopify
- Install the Facebook & Instagram Sales Channel from the Shopify App Store.
- Connect your Meta Business Portfolio and select the correct ad account, Pixel ID and page.
- Enable the Conversions API directly in the channel – Shopify sends events server-side and handles deduplication with the Pixel automatically.
- Connect your product catalogue: Shopify continuously syncs products, prices, availability and images.
- Check in the Events Manager that
Purchase,AddToCartandViewContentarrive – via browser and server.
Make sure that the content IDs of your events match the IDs in the catalogue. Only then does dynamic retargeting work reliably.
Setup with Shopware
Depending on the version, Shopware offers official and community plugins for the Meta connection:
- Install a vetted Meta/Facebook plugin (Pixel + CAPI) or connect the CAPI server-side via a tag manager with a server container.
- Enter the Pixel ID and a CAPI access token from the Events Manager.
- Export your product feed (CSV/XML) with all mandatory fields:
id,title,description,availability,price,link,image_link,brand,google_product_category. - Set up the feed as a scheduled catalogue source, so that prices and stock stay up to date automatically.
- Check the deduplication: the Pixel and CAPI event must share the same
event_id.
Checking signal quality – the step most people skip
A setup is only finished when the data is right. Check in the Events Manager:
- Event Match Quality – aim for above 7. More parameters submitted (email, phone number, name – hashed) raise the value.
- Deduplication rate – are browser and server events merged into a single event?
- Catalogue diagnostics – no rejected items, no missing mandatory fields.
Only once these three things are clean do you give the algorithm a fair chance – and lay the foundation for Advantage+ Shopping and dynamic retargeting.
Checklist
- Pixel installed and firing on all standard events
- Conversions API active, with deduplication
- Event Match Quality above 7
- Catalogue synced, without rejected items
- Content IDs of events and catalogue match
