The Most Successful Creative Formats for Performance Ads
Your creative is your targeting today. These ad formats perform most reliably in e-commerce – with the principles behind them to make them your own.

Ever since Meta’s delivery became creative-driven, the rule is: your creative is your targeting. The algorithm (see Meta Andromeda) decides who to show your ad to based on creative signals. This turns the question “Which audience?” into the question “Which creative?”.
These formats currently perform most reliably – but more important than the form is the principle behind it.
1. UGC & Testimonial
Authentic, user- or creator-generated content that doesn’t look like advertising in the feed. A real person, an honest tone, phone-camera aesthetics. UGC regularly beats high-gloss in paid social, because it builds trust before it sells.
2. Problem → Solution
Shows a concrete problem in the first few seconds and then your product as the solution. It works because it taps into a real buying motive instead of listing features.
3. Before / After & Comparison
A visible transformation or a direct comparison (with the previous solution, not with competitors by name). Powerful, because it makes the benefit immediately tangible.
4. Founder & Story Ad
The person behind the brand explains why the product exists. Builds closeness and credibility – especially effective for young brands and higher-priced products.
5. Strong Statics
Underrated: a clear offer, social proof (reviews, numbers), a listicle graphic or a feature comparison as a static image. Quick to produce, often surprisingly efficient – ideal for complementing video formats.
What all the winners have in common
The format is secondary. These principles decide it:
- Hook in the first 1–3 seconds – the scroll-stopper. Without it, the rest doesn’t matter.
- One buying motive per creative – don’t try to say everything at once.
- Vertical (9:16) and mobile first, with subtitles (the sound is usually off).
- A native look and feel instead of ad aesthetics – especially on TikTok and in Reels.
- A clear call to action at the end.
From single creative to pipeline
A good creative is a coincidence. A system that continuously produces good creatives is a competitive advantage. That’s why we think of creatives as a pipeline: develop new angles, iterate on winners, stop losers. You can read how this works systematically under systematic testing – and in our article on the Creative Testing Framework.
